Maybe you’ve already spotted the beautiful Helios lamp in our store. This unique piece of art was created by Amsterdam-based artist Zoran Strijbosch. We visited his studio to ask him a few questions about the lamp and his vision on art and light. Interview can be found below.✨

What inspired you to design the Helios lamp, and how does this design reflect your vision on light and design?

My inspiration for the Helios lamp came from a fascination with the role of light in our daily lives. Light is more than just functional; it has the power to create ambiance, evoke emotions, and change our perception of a space. With the Helios lamp, I wanted to create an object that not only provides light but also plays with the way light spreads and surrounds us. The lamp reflects my vision that design should be both aesthetic and functional, deeply influencing how we experience our surroundings.

How do you weave (art) history into your designs, and why do you find it important to tell these stories through your work?

Art history is an inexhaustible source of inspiration for me. Through my passion for history, I feel a drive to integrate these elements from the past, telling my story through them, which adds a deeper layer to my designs. For example, with the Helios lamp, the name refers to the Greek sun god. It’s important for me to incorporate these historical references into my work because they create a bridge between the old and the new, establishing a continuity that reminds us of where we come from.

Can you take us through your creative process? How do you transform an idea into a tangible design, like the Helios lamp?

My creative process usually begins with a concept or story from the past. I start by sketching and creating simple models to see how shapes and structures work in space. For the Helios lamp, I wanted to explore the dynamics of light, so I experimented with different materials and light sources to achieve the desired effects. I continuously test and refine my designs, placing great value on feedback. It’s a process of discovery and refinement until the final result is both functional and visually inspiring.

What emotions or experiences do you hope people feel or have when they see your designs, like the Helios lamp?

I hope people experience a sense of wonder and tranquility when they see my designs. The Helios lamp is meant to create a warm, inviting atmosphere while also making a visual statement. I want my work to encourage people to appreciate the beauty of everyday things and to spark an interest in exploring stories from the past.

What role does sustainability play in your design process, and how do you ensure that your creations remain timeless?

Sustainability is definitely a part of my design process. I strive to use sustainable materials and production methods that minimize environmental impact. Additionally, I aim to create designs that are timeless by combining classic elements with modern insights. For the Helios lamp, for example, I try to use leftover materials from the studio as much as possible.

How do you see the future of Zoran Strijbosch? Are there any new projects planned?

I’ve recently been working on new ideas and projects. Quietly, I’m developing a series of designs that further explore the theme of lighting, as this is where my passion lies for now. I want to keep innovating and further develop my vision of design while staying true to my core values of aesthetics, sustainability, and functionality. There’s a lot coming up soon, so stay tuned! A fun event to mention is the Dutch Design Week in Eindhoven at the end of October. We’ll be showcasing at ‘Piet Hein Eek’!
